Features and benefits
Better engagement through shared experience
A peer is a person who has had several years in behavioral health recovery. Optum programs offer help from people who’ve “been there” to increase understanding of each member’s individual concerns, as well as foster hope and encouragement toward a successful recovery.
Supporting the member’s path to recovery
Peers are trained to support members’ engagement in community treatment and recovery programs. They also connect members to resources that help them manage symptoms, maintain wellness, plan for crisis, and build support networks with family, friends and providers.
An essential part of our recovery approach
Peers help members understand their recovery plan in terms that make sense to them and reflect their personal values, strengths and goals. From there, peers help motivate members to follow the actions needed for them to live purposeful lives and make positive change.
Improving the health of local communities
Optum has facilitated the incorporation of peer support services into public mental health systems in more than 20 states, resulting in better adherence to follow-up treatment, fewer unnecessary re-hospitalizations and significant cost savings for local governments.
